A Stunning Coastal Adventure with Friends
After celebrating a wedding in Istanbul, we decided to embark on an adventure along the stunning Adriatic coast of Croatia. Eager to bask in the sunshine, relish the pristine waters, and savor local delicacies, our first destination was Dubrovnik, renowned for its historical significance, exquisite beaches, and delectable cuisine. Days were spent lounging on sandy shores, marveling at the azure expanse of the Adriatic, and indulging in authentic Croatian fare.
Venturing further, we embarked on a day trip to the enchanting town of Kotor, Montenegro, a highlight of our journey. The panoramic vistas of the Bay of Kotor, framed by rugged peaks and adorned with a charming old town, left us spellbound. We immersed ourselves in the local culinary scene, sampling Montenegrin delights like cevapi and freshly caught seafood. As of Jan 2023, the currency of Croatia is the euro. Our taxi ride from Dubrovnik Airport to Lapad Beach cost us 40 € by taxi. A visa is not required for US passport holders for temporary tourist and business trips for up to 90 days during six months, starting from the day of the first entry. First Day Lapad Beach
Wow, what an adventure! My friends and I took Turkish Airlines‘ direct flight from Istanbul to Dubrovnik from the brand new Istanbul Airport. We couldn’t wait to explore the beautiful coastal city, and we found the perfect spot to stay – a stunning Airbnb on Lapad Beach that was just 22 km away from the airport. Although we were initially considering staying in the old town, we soon realized that most of the reviews mentioned issues with noise and transportation.
That’s when we decided to escape the hustle and bustle and find a place to relax. And boy, did we hit the jackpot! Our Airbnb was an incredible terrace apartment with an unbeatable view of Lapad Beach and the most breathtaking sunsets we had ever seen. It was the perfect base for our Adriatic adventure, and we couldn’t wait to see what else Dubrovnik had in store for us!
Our culinary journey kicked off with a delightful dinner at Restaurant Tramuntara, where our taste buds were treated to an array of exquisite flavors. Nestled in a trendy and stylish ambiance, accompanied by breathtaking views of the sea, the setting alone made it an unforgettable dining experience. Each dish served reflected a genuine passion for food and a commitment to impressing guests, evident in its meticulous preparation and presentation.
As the night unfolded, we indulged in local wines sourced from Studenac Market and Tommy, elevating the experience with their distinctive flavors. With gratitude for such a magical start to our Croatian adventure, we spent the evening immersed in the beauty of our surroundings, savoring the anticipation of the adventures that lay ahead.
Second Day Old Town Dubrovnik
Our second day in Dubrovnik unfolded as a magical journey guided by the charming Dubravka, our private tour guide in the Old City. With each step, we were immersed in the rich tapestry of history and culture, led through iconic landmarks and hidden treasures alike.
From the ancient Franciscan monastery boasting Europe’s oldest pharmacy to the resilient Sponza Palace and the majestic Cathedral of the Assumption of Virgin Mary, Dubravka unveiled the stories and secrets woven into Dubrovnik’s cobblestone streets. Her intimate knowledge of the town’s nooks and crannies added layers of intrigue to our exploration, making every corner a discovery.
Following Dubravka’s expert guidance, we traversed the heart of Medieval Dubrovnik, soaking in its timeless charm and vibrant spirit. As the tour concluded, we found ourselves enchanted by the city’s allure, eager to unravel more of its mysteries at our own pace.
I highly recommend embarking on Dubravka’s Hearth of the Medieval Dubrovnik tour to uncover the city’s hidden gems, followed by a leisurely exploration of the old town. With each visit, Dubrovnik reveals new depths of beauty and fascination, beckoning us to return and delve further into its captivating essence.
Third Day Kotor
On the third day of our vacation, our anticipation soared as we set our sights on Kotor, Montenegro. To ensure an enriching experience, we entrusted Dubravka to organize a private tour, which commenced with a chauffeured ride from our Airbnb in a luxurious Mercedes van. Covering a distance of 93 km, the journey from Lapad Beach to Kotor unfolded swiftly, taking less than two hours. The private tour’s door-to-door convenience came at approximately 400 €, averaging around 65-70 € per person and encompassing a personalized walking tour of Kotor’s old city.
Upon arrival in Kotor, we found ourselves spellbound by the city’s storied past and timeless allure. Our knowledgeable guide led us through the ancient City Walls of Kotor’s old town, offering a captivating introduction to Montenegro’s wonders.
We traversed the Boka Navy Square, St. Luke Square, St. Mary of the River, and Northern Gate with Skurda River, savoring every moment of the 90-minute tour guided by a local licensed expert—an integral component of our day trip package.
Of course, we indulged in another delicious meal at Restaurant PRŽUN. I recommend Arborio with saffron, Spagettoni with seafood, and Straccetti alla Romana. We also treated ourselves to some delectable Moscow cake and Irish coffee at Forza Cafe in the old town after lunch.
Afterward, we continued our drive, taking in the breathtaking panoramic road that meandered through the Boka Kotorska Bay before boarding a ferry to the other side. We rode through Herceg Novi to the border, marveling at the incredible views of the Dubrovnik Riviera along the way. It was a truly unforgettable day, and we felt so grateful to have experienced the beauty of Kotor and its surroundings.
Last Day Beach only
During our stay in Dubrovnik, my companions and I immersed ourselves in the charm of the old town, embarked on enlightening walking tours, and savored delectable meals at authentic local eateries. However, as our time drew to a close, we opted for a leisurely day by the beach. After a blissful day of sun-soaked relaxation and refreshing swims, we returned to our Airbnb to rejuvenate. Rather than venturing out for dinner, we opted for a cozy evening in, dining alfresco on our terrace.
Perusing the offerings of nearby restaurants, we curated a selection of culinary delights ranging from seafood platters to classic Croatian fare. To accompany our feast, we procured a bottle of local wine that had piqued our interest. It proved to be the idyllic conclusion to our Dubrovnik escapade – a culmination of fine food, delightful wine, and cherished camaraderie amidst the serene backdrop of Lapad Bay.
